The American Heart Association and the American Council on Sports Medicine have just re-issued their guidelines on exercise. The new version has been eagerly awaited since the previous one dates back to 1995. The biggest change in the 2007 guidelines is the acceptance that muscle strengthening is very important - not just a nice to do after cardio. Two separate reports were written: one is aimed at healthy people in the age range 18 to 65; the other one is for healthy adults aged 65 and up. Packaged into this older adult guide is information to help adults in the age range 50 to 64 with serious health issues [the actual wording in this guideline is " . . with clinically significant chronic conditions and/or functional limitations."]. September 2007 saw Dr Ron Segal release the results of detailed research into the impact of exercise on Type 2 diabetes. In summary: "Either aerobic or resistance training alone improves glycemic control in Type 2 diabetes but the improvements are greatest with combined aerobic and resistance training." |
